What are the Special Migration Statistics (SMS)?

The Special Migration Statistics (SMS) is one of the specialist data sets produced from the 1991 Census. The SMS can be regarded as a pair of three-dimensional arrays, where the dimensions are origins, destinations and attributes and the cell contents are counts of migrants falling in the origin-destination-attribute combinations:

• SMS1: provides migration flow statistics between and within wards (England and Wales) and postcode sectors (Scotland)
• SMS2: provides migration flow statistics between and within local government districts in Great Britain.
