What are the SARs?

The Samples of Anonymized Records (SARs) is the second microdata set and was extracted from the 1991 Census in both Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with modified coding of sensitive variables and without any identifying names and addresses. The microdata are released as two public use samples:

Researchers can access these data online or can transfer them to their desktop/notebook computers. Note that the geography coding, regions, in the household SAR is much coarser than the individual SAR, districts or grouped districts, because of the greater risks of disclosure of linked individuals in a household - their combined characteristics are much more likely to be unique within a subnational population.

More information about this census output can be found on the SARs website, which is housed at the Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survery Research (CCSR). [Note: These links open in a new window]

If you are interested in either working with SAR data or accessing teaching material on the SARs, CCSR have developed a set of CHCC learning and teaching units [Note: This link opens in a new window] that cover introductory data analysis well as more discipline-specific topics.
