What are the outputs of the census?

The census collects completed questionnaires from the nation's households and its communal establishments (colleges, prisons, military bases, long-stay hospitals) and enters them into a database. From this database are produced the outputs released to researchers.

The figure below represents the five forms in which census outputs are currently produced in the UK.

The five forms of census output: microdata, census area statistics, interaction data, boundary data and lookup tables.
