What are Enumeration Districts?

An Enumeration District (ED) is the name given to the collection geography in the United Kingdom - it is a geographical division of the area to be enumerated by an individual census employee called an enumerator.

In 1991, EDs typically contained approximately 200 households and 400 persons.

EDs are designed to nest within wards, the smallest of the statutory areas, allowing aggregation of the census results for the full hierarchy of administrative divisions above this.
