How many topics are covered?
With each Census there is a change in the number of topics but, for example, the 1991 Local Base and Small Area Statistics covered many topics which can be categorised into six themes:

Demographic and economic characteristics

Housing
-
Households and household composition
-
Household spaces and dwellings
-
Scotland and Wales only tables
-
10 per cent topics on employment and occupation

In the 2001 Census, there were 34 core topics for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and a full list of topics can be found in Census Fact Sheet 9 [Note: This link opens in a new window] (Denham and Rees, 2002). These core
topics can be divided into the following broad categories:

Household accommodation (e.g. number of rooms for sole use by household)

Demographic characteristics (e.g. sex, date of birth and marital status)

Health/long-term illness/provision of care (e.g. long-term illness which limits daily activity or work)

Qualifications (e.g. academic and vocational qualifications)

Household relationships(e.g. husband, grandchild)

Cultural characteristics (e.g. ethnic group)
-
Migration (e.g. address one year ago)
-
Employment (e.g. job title and work done in main job)
-
Work place and journey to work. (e.g. address of work place)
