The UK census is more than a simple headcount and the publication of total numbers; the aim of the Census is to obtain a detailed picture of people, households and housing in the UK at a single point in time and this is achieved by producing a Census form with questions carefully designed to yield good-quality data. The Census includes key demographic details such as age and sex, information about socio-economic characteristics such as occupation and socio-economic class, and also details on household accommodation and amenities (Dale and Marsh, 1993). Data are also collected on car ownership, mode of travel to work and educational qualifications.
