The SARs are an important data set for the study of minority ethnic groups. Such research is difficult with most of the major national sample surveys because of insufficient sample size. However, with an overall sample size of over 1 million in the individual SAR, it is possible to carry out fairly detailed analysis of small groups in the population with the SARs.
1991 SARs have been used to research ethnic differences in a variety of areas including economic activity and unemployment, educational attainment, participation in full time education, class and occupational attainment. Most of this research has highlighted the considerable disadvantages suffered by ethnic minority populations as compared with the majority white population.
