What is the purpose of this FAQ?

This FAQ provides a summary of the many different uses made of the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARS). An innovation of the 1991 Census, SARs differ from traditional Census outputs in being abstracts of individual census returns, rather than aggregated data (a link to unit on types of data). Information that would lead to the identification of an individual or household (such as name of address) is removed. The 1991 SARs are available for Great Britain and Northern Ireland separately. There are two main files, a 2% national sample of individuals and a 1% national sample of households. For more information about the 1991 SARs and for the specification and access arrangements for SARs for the 2001 Census, see the SARs website. [Note: This link opens in a new window]
