This census included the same question as 1981 as well as new questions. These related to:

• ethnic group
• limiting long-term illness
• limited term-time address of students.
• weekly hours worked (reintroduced)
• central heating (in household amenities section)

Other categories were updated, for example in relation to tenure, economic position and relationship in the household.
